This recipe delivers the ultimate comfort dessert: tender, spiced apples beneath a crunchy, buttery oat crumble. It is simple to prepare and perfect for cozy fall evenings or family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced about 1/4 inch thick
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or an 8×8 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, lemon juice, granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and 2 tablespoons of flour. Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into your prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer.
  4. Prepare the topping: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, brown sugar, 1/2 cup flour, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon.
  5. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining. Do not overmix.
  6. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
  7. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling thickly around the edges.
  8. Let the apple crisp cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly.
  9. Serve warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • For the best texture, use a mix of tart and sweet apples.
  • If the topping begins to brown too quickly during baking, loosely cover the dish with aluminum foil for the remaining cook time.
  • This dessert is excellent served warm with vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
