Make a quick, family-friendly weeknight dinner that tastes like a Big Mac using this easy skillet recipe featuring ground beef, cheese, pickles, and special sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 1/2 cup dill pickle slices, chopped
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for toasting buns)

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the water, ketchup, yellow mustard, sweet pickle relish, white vinegar, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to make the sauce.
  3. Pour the sauce mixture over the cooked beef and onion in the skillet. Stir to combine.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  5. Reduce the heat to low. Place the 4 slices of American cheese over the meat mixture in four separate sections. Cover the skillet and cook for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
  6. While the cheese melts, lightly toast the hamburger buns if desired (you can butter the insides and toast them in a separate pan).
  7. Spoon the cheesy sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns.
  8. Top each serving with the chopped dill pickle slices. Place the top bun on and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a copycat special sauce flavor, use a combination of mayonnaise and sweet pickle relish in your sauce base.
  • You can substitute ground turkey for ground beef if you prefer a lighter option.
  • If you want a richer flavor, lightly butter the inside of the buns and toast them in a dry pan before serving.
