Create a rich, smooth, and fluffy chocolate buttercream frosting quickly. This easy recipe uses simple ingredients and sets up fast, making it perfect for topping cakes, cupcakes, and brownies.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 to 5 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Place the softened butter in a large bowl. Beat the butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until it becomes light and creamy, about 2 minutes.
  2. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar and cocoa powder to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and 3 tablespoons of milk or cream. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 2 to 3 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  4. If the frosting seems too thick, add the remaining milk or cream, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired spreading consistency. Add the salt and mix briefly to combine.
  5. Use immediately to frost your favorite cakes, cupcakes, or brownies.

Notes

  • For a richer chocolate flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
  • If your butter is too warm, the frosting may become too soft; chill the bowl for 10 minutes if this happens.
  • This recipe yields enough frosting for one 9-inch layer cake or about 18 cupcakes.
