Create a versatile, sweet, and tangy barbecue sauce from scratch in just ten minutes. This recipe balances classic American flavors and works well for grilling, dipping, or glazing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

Instructions

  1. Combine the ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and yellow mustard in a medium saucepan.
  2. Add the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper, if you are using it.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir the mixture constantly until the brown sugar dissolves completely and the sauce begins to simmer gently.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat. The sauce will thicken slightly as it cools.
  6. Transfer the homemade BBQ sauce to an airtight container. Allow it to cool completely before serving or storing.

Notes

  • For a smokier flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon of liquid smoke when combining the ingredients.
  • If you prefer a thinner sauce, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water while simmering.
  • This sauce stores well in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
