Ingredients
Scale
1 pound bulk pork sausage
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1 package (12 ounces) pumpernickel or rye bread slices
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly toast the bread slices until they are firm but not brown. Set aside.
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it up as it cooks, until it is fully browned. Drain off any excess grease completely.
In a medium bowl, combine the cooked sausage, softened cream cheese, cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well until everything is fully combined into a spreadable mixture.
Spread a generous layer of the sausage and cheese mixture evenly over each toasted bread slice.
Arrange the topped bread slices on a baking sheet.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese topping is melted and bubbly.
Serve these hot appetizer bites immediately.
Notes
For a slightly different texture, you can substitute Velveeta cheese for the cheddar cheese in this recipe.
If you do not have pumpernickel bread, use rye bread or firm white bread slices.
You can prepare the sausage and cheese mixture up to one day ahead and store it covered in the refrigerator.
