- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup hazelnut spread (Nutella style)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Whipped cream, for topping
- Toasted chopped hazelnuts, for garnish
- Combine the milk and heavy cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Heat until steaming, but do not boil.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt.
- Slowly whisk about half a cup of the hot milk mixture into the cocoa powder mixture until smooth. This prevents lumps.
- Pour the cocoa mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk.
- Add the hazelnut spread and stir constantly until the spread is completely melted and incorporated.
- Continue heating over medium-low heat, stirring often, until the hot chocolate is hot throughout, about 3 to 5 minutes. Do not let it boil.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Pour the hot chocolate into mugs. Top each serving with whipped cream and a sprinkle of toasted chopped hazelnuts.
Notes
- For an extra festive touch, add a splash of hazelnut liqueur to the adult version after removing it from the heat.
- If you do not have hazelnut spread, substitute with 2 tablespoons of hazelnut syrup and reduce the sugar slightly.
- You can use any milk you prefer, but whole milk provides the creamiest texture for this rich drink.
